Vascular Diagnostics with Ultrasound (Angiology)

Conducting blood flow studies using the ultrasound Doppler technique on a realistic arm model, demonstrating the differences between continuous venous and pulsatile arterial flow

The experiment demonstrates how to conduct blood flow studies using the ultrasound Doppler technique. The differences between continuous venous and pulsatile arterial flow are demonstrated using a realistic arm model. The influence of stenosis and the Windkessel function on pulsatility is also investigated.

Keywords: Ultrasound scattering, frequency shift, Doppler effect, Doppler sonography, continuity equation, pulse curves, stenosis, Windkessel function

Doppler sonography is based on the effect of the frequency shift between the transmitted and received ultrasound signal in a transmitter-receiver system in which the transmitter and receiver move relative to each other. By using the Doppler effect, moving structures such as flowing blood can be examined and their relative speeds determined and visualized. In the experiment, the blood flow is examined using a Doppler probe on a realistic arm model. A vascular constriction is built into the arm model to simulate the influence of a stenosis. This allows the differences between healthy and altered vessels to be clearly shown in the spectral image.
In addition to continuous operation, the pump used can also be operated in a pulsatile manner to simulate arterial blood flow. In the experiment, the influence of the stenosis and the Windkessel function on the pulsatility is examined.

The measurement software provides various windows for evaluating and visualizing the recorded Doppler signals. The sample screenshots of the measurement software show a comparison of the typical Doppler spectral images for a continuous venous flow and the flow in the area of a stenosis.
