Michelson Interferometer

Thermal Expansion

Holmarc’s Model No: HO-ED-INT-06TE, Michelson Interferometer Thermal Expansion is used for measuring the coefficient of thermal expansion of solids. The linear expansion o f a solid is conveniently detectable using a Michelson interferometer. The linear thermal expansion coefficient, of a solid is defined as the increase in length suffered by unit length of the solid when its temperature is raised by one degree Celsius. Students can assemble the interferometer out of individual modules by fixing them on optical breadboard. All components required for such assembly, including screws and allen keys, are supplied with this package.

The instrument uses laser diode as light source. The assembling and alignments are easy to understand. Laser, mirrors and beam splitter are mounted on precision kinematic mounts for fine tuning and alignment. The interference fringes are obtained on a screen and can be viewed with naked eye.

Experiment:

To calculate the coefficient of linear thermal expansion materials (Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Copper etc.)
