Ultrasound in Materials Science and Engineering (Ultrasound Experiment Set 3)
Non-destructive testing (NDT) using the most common ultrasonic testing methods, such as pulse-echo and through-transmission methods, angle head testing and the TOFD method on various material samples
One of the main applications of ultrasound is non-destructive testing (NDT). Here, ultrasound testing has established itself as a standard method for analyzing material defects such as cracks, cavities, gas bubbles and inhomogeneities in a wide variety of materials such as metals, plastics or composites. A variety of methods have been developed that can meet the individual testing tasks. With this experiment set, some of the most common test methods in ultrasonic testing, such as pulse-echo method, transmission method, angle head testing and the TOFD method, are explained and applied to various material samples. On the basis of knowledge of the physical properties of ultrasonic waves (e.g. speed of sound, sound attenuation, reflection, refraction, scattering), experiments are carried out on adjusting US testing equipment, such as creating an AVG diagram or calibrating an angle probe on special test specimens. In addition, the performance of different test methods is tested on different types of defects and quantitative measurements are carried out, such as determining crack depths in aluminum samples. By expanding the set with other material samples and accessories from our range, the experiments can be extended to include more specific test methods using transverse and surface waves or guided waves (Lamb waves). The experiments and measurements in this experiment set offer the possibility of a clear introduction to the problems of ultrasonic testing for students and are therefore suitable for training in almost interesting for all engineering disciplines.
